Senate Enquiry restores my faith in democracy....Almost

Senate Enquiry restores my faith in democracy....Almost[[SIZE=3]I was over the moon when i heard the announcement of a senate enquiry into the academic bias evident in Secondary Schools and Universities. To hear this on the day after i blasted the media in a blog on their left leaning tendancies restored my faith in our elected politicians to take action on an issue of importance without being prompted by the political awareness media attention can create.

However it also made me question the operation of our democratic system. The media is supposed to be an advocate of the public, its function is an acknowledgment that the average joe does not have time to watch Question time live on the ABC nor the interest. The media should be highlighting these issues of Public importance, because all though i applaud the coalition senators in Victoria for pushing this, the fact is that we cannot trust our politicians to always do the right thing. The media is the safety net, it should not simply be reporting the announcement of an enquiry, it should have been the driving force.

For the sake of Australia we can do nothing but hope that this enquiry brings reform in Higher education and that this reform flows through to the Leftist Media in this nation[/SIZE

I think bias is acceptable in schools - after all, considering the general class of people who become teachers, it is fair to assume they will be left-leaning.
Bias will certainly have an effect on those students who are unthinking and willing to accept anything, but those who rise above the bias will form their own opinions - these are the people of value, and they are only made stronger in their fight to overcome any left bias.

And the media is shit. Hopefully people will learn to stop believing everything they read and think for themselves.

But perhaps I am putting too much faith in the human race.

Opinions are formed on the basis of environment. The unfortunate fact is that in schools the subject matter is so broad that students cannot possibly research every part of every topic and as such are practically forced to take the words of their teachers.
However more concerning is the institutionalised bias, such as questions in School certificate history as "explain the implications of the constitutional disaster of 1972"
This type of bias is unacceptable. And yes, i agree, the students that come out of that are unbiased and are taught to think critically, but the vast majority come out of school politically disinterested but with a leftist view on key issues

You don't think it's possible that those students could have come out of school with a leftist view anyway? One needs to take into account several things - socioeconomic situations, political leanings of society in general, current policies and their relation to prominent issues - to be able to fully understand why the "vast majority" or students leave school with such a view.
I'm not denying the bias in saying all of that, but I still think it needs to be considered.

i m in favor of Mr. Blonde. you are right that we don't make a complete faith on news paper or news. it may be right or may be humor. we have to think them self and after that take any decision. student age or student have very important role in this.
